Site Visit: The Renovation and Pedestrianisation of Torino's Historic Via Roma

In February 2026, we visited Via Roma in Turin, where the Comune di Torino is undertaking the full renewal and pedestrianisation of the city’s principal historic street.

Running from Piazza Castello to Piazza Carlo Felice, the project replaces asphalt with high-quality stone paving, upgrades drainage and lighting, and raises street levels to align with the porticoes, creating a continuous, barrier-free public realm along the entire corridor.

Delivered in phases, the project treats the street as long-term civic infrastructure rather than simply a transport route. It is a clear example of sustained investment in permanent, walkable city centres and the kind of public-realm continuity many cities are now working to achieve.
