Our team attended the World Bank’s 9th Urbanization and Development Conference, held under the theme “Urban Economics in Action: Addressing African Cities’ Challenges.” The event brought together academics, policymakers, and development practitioners to explore how research can inform policy decisions and the allocation of resources to build more productive, liveable, and sustainable cities across Africa.

We participated in sessions ranging from the economics of minibus taxis in Johannesburg to sewer blockages in Cape Town and public transport reform in Lagos.

Key insights from the conference highlighted the central role of well-planned urbanisation in driving Africa’s economic growth, the need for integrated transport and land-use planning, and the importance of strengthening public transport systems as essential engines of equity and productivity. Discussions emphasised the value of understanding informality, including micro-entrepreneurs and minibus taxis, and incorporating it into urban policy rather than treating it as a constraint. The event also showcased new data-driven tools and spatial economic models that can support evidence-based planning for more inclusive, resilient and efficient African cities.
