Your City Idea installation

How can public space be used to encourage active citizenship?

2011

Our Future Cities, in partnership with a local exhibition company, created the Your City Idea mobile installation to engage the public in urban issues. It was created in 2012 in response to a failed public comment process surrounding the controversial Wescape development. The installation was a finalist for the 2014 World Design Capital proposal by Cape Town.

Between 2011 and 2015, it travelled to various public spaces, including stations, the airport, and events. The installation provided visitors with four options from which to vote on two urban issues or concerns. Four pigeon receptacles containing images or future visions for Cape Town represented the options.

This temporary urban intervention was initially designed as part of the build-up to the 2014 Spaza Urban Innovation Festival as part of Cape Town's year as World Design Capital. It was constructed using a modular aluminium system covered in a 5mm forex lacquer in yellow. The Spaza Festival emphasised the use of impermanent interventions in cities that are in constant flux.
