Caesarstone Student Design Competition for Athlone Olympic Sports Centre

Cape Town 2040 and Our Future Cities invited the entrants to create a conceptual and functional design for a sports centre in Nantes Park, Athlone. UCT Architecture collaboration on an Olympic Indoor Sports Arena

We partnered with Thomas Chapman and UCT Architecture students to explore design proposals for an Olympic-standard Indoor Arena in Athlone’s Vygieskraal precinct. This collaboration formed part of their “Landscapes of Community” studio led by Thomas Chapman(@local_studio ) under the theme “Spanning Athlone: Translating Large-Scale Sporting Venues for Urban Regeneration".

Students explored how a 7,000-seat arena can host indoor sports for an Olympic Games while supporting community regeneration and adapting for community use, training and local events after the Games. The final studio review took place on 20 March and the top proposals were submitted to the 2025 IOC IAKS Architecture and Design Award.
