About Our Future Cities

Our Future Cities is an urbanism practice, consultancy, and think tank led by urbanist Rashiq Fataar.

We are working towards a future in which cities are more sustainable and equitable but are also nurturing, exciting, vibrant, and loved, with Cape Town, South Africa, as its base and inspiration.

Our interdisciplinary team is fascinated with the systems, processes, projects, people, and ideas that create opportunities to make better cities of tomorrow in a number of cross-cutting areas, including public spaces, housing, mobility, community development, and our environment.

  • Flexible working hours around personal and project schedules 
  • We use tools such as Google Suite, Slack, WhatsApp, Zoom daily to coordinate, communicate and collaborate

Responsibilities

The Research and Community Coordinator aids Our Future Cities in research, data analysis, community engagement, and reporting for urban projects. They help produce communication materials, organise stakeholder engagements, and provide administrative support, including event planning and document management. This role is key to fostering coordination and communication, supporting the mission to create exciting, joyful and nurturing cities..

Research and Analysis:

  • Assist in research and analysis 
  • Support data gathering and analysis 
  • Contribute to preparing reports and presentations 

Community and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Help in creating communication content for various projects
  • Assist in organising stakeholder meetings, public consultations, and community engagement sessions 
  • Support the dissemination of findings and reports related to stakeholder engagement,

Administrative Support and Project Coordination:

  • Provide administrative support for projects across Our Future Cities’ key service areas, ensuring smooth operation and coordination
  • Assist with the planning and execution of events and workshops
  • Help maintain project schedules and documentation, facilitating effective communication within the team and with external partners.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience, preferably in urban studies, communications, or related fields.
  • 0 -2 years of work experience (outside of academia)
  • Experience in administrative tasks, project support, and basic research is desirable.

Skills

  • Comfortable  engaging with different professionals and groups 
  • Strong organisational and communication abilities, with attention to detail 
  • Proficiency in office software (e.g., Microsoft Office suite) and good writing skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented setting.
  • Experience with Adobe suite is desirable but not essential
